Why is everyone talking about BIM? What is it?

BIM stands for Building Information Modeling. It is often used to refer to a model of a building created during design or construction.

The US National Building Information Model Standard Project Committee has the following definition:

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility. A BIM is a shared knowledge resource for information about a facility forming a reliable basis for decisions during its life-cycle; defined as existing from earliest conception to demolition. [1]

The value of BIM during design and construction is well proven. You may read more about it here.

BIM doesn’t just save you money during design and construction. When models are developed with operations in mind, they can be a valuable source of information critical to your maintenance team. Examples include: the manufacturer of managed assets, model numbers, key operating parameters, connection details, and manuals.
